This French seaside resort city is perfect for exploration by foot but also  has a good public and private transport system: taxis, uber, trams and busses are widely available so buy a day pass to hop on and off.

Your walking city tour of Cannes  will give you an overview of the city and include a visit to – Palais des Festival steps made famous in the Cannes Film Festival.  You can take in the wonderful market, Marché Forville and afterward  visit  the Le Suquet, old town of Cannes.

Cannes Highlights To Explore on Your Own

Exploring Cannes will be a highlight of your trip if you have a few hours or a few days Cannes is famous for its fine sandy beaches, with gorgeous views and calm Mediterranean waters ideal for bathing. Including the nearby îles de Lérin and Estérel coastline, there are seven kilometers of beach property in Cannes. With so many options, there is something for every visitor.

Here are some highlights to consider with your time.

  • Stroll along  the famous Boulevard de la Croisette,  lined with opulent villas, upscale boutiques and lavish Belle Epoque hotels, such as the legendary InterContinental Carlton Cannes, a masterpiece of Art Nouveau architecture designed by Charles Dalmas.
  • Visit the The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, the venue for the Cannes Film Festival. Designed by the architects Bennett and Druet, the building was completed in 1982 and is used for events, conferences, music concerts, and festivals throughout the year.
  • Explore the Vieux Port (Old Port) laying below the historic Le Suquet quarter. The Vieux Port, also known as Port Cannes I, is located near the Gare Maritime (Marine Railway Station), which was built in 1957. Besides its use as a dock for yachts and other sailboats, the Vieux Port is the launching point for the Royal Regatta.
  • See the lovely district of Cannes  which exemplifies glamorous French Riviera scener so loved by a famous resident, Picasso.
  • Visit Chapelle Bellini Built in 1894 by the Count Vitali, the Chapelle Bellini was once part of a Florentine-style villa and is set in a beautiful park. Identified by the arms of the Count, the chapel features an Italian Baroque design with an impressive clock tower and an interesting wooden staircase inside.

Nice has a small but lively gay scent to be explored

Bars

Le Cave Wilson – Gay cabaret bar that attracts a large LGBT crowd. Open from 6pm. Closed on Tuesdays. 16 rue Gubernatis

Malbar Station  – Popular gay cruise bar and meeting place in Nice. Malabar Station is like an underground train station dungeon, complete with bar area, dark rooms, cabins and play zone. The bar hosts regular gay-themed events including underwear parties. Open every evening until 2:30am. 10 rue Bonaparte.

Le Couloir – Small gay café bar near the Promenade du Paillon in Nice. Open daily from 5pm-1am. 1 rue Alberti

RED Kafe – Gay bar, café and crêperie (since 2014) serving light meals, snacks, coffee, imported wine and cocktails.   9 rue Halévy- located a 2-minute walk from the beach. Outdoor seats available.

Clubs

Le 6 – Fun gay nightclub that has been around since 1999. Le 6 is famous for its sexy go-go dancers who will keep you entertained all night. Located close to the seafront in the Old Town of Nice. Open 7 days a week but busiest on the weekends. 6 rue Raoul Bosio,

Le Glam – French Riviera’s favorite gay nightclub where DJ’s play techno/house/dance music. Le GLAM hosts regular themed parties with drag shows, cabaret and bear parties. Open Friday through Sunday. 6 rue Eugène Emmanuel

Le KLUBBER – Gay dance party in Nice (which replaced “Kult”). KLUBBER parties feature guest DJ’s, go-go dancers and a dark room. Check their Facebook page for upcoming events. Varying opening times. 14 rue Benoît Bunico

High Club – One of the biggest, most popular nightclubs in Nice with a massive dance floor, excellent light & sound system and features some of France’s leading DJ’s. Predominantly a straight club with some gay crowd on the weekend. 45  Promenade des Anglais.

Cruising/Saunas

Le CODE – Hardcore cruise club and playground for men,  features dark rooms, private cabins, slings, prison, maze, videos, internet zone, etc. Open 7 days a week, with themed nights – check the website for agenda.

4 rue Papon,  nearest station : tram: Arrêt Place Garibaldi

Malabar Station – Popular gay cruise bar and meeting place,  like an underground train station dungeon, complete with bar area, dark rooms, cabins and play zone. The bar hosts regular gay-themed events including underwear parties. Open every evening until 2:30am. 10 rue Bonaparte

Club Le7 – Once one of Nice’s first gay saunas. Club Le7 is an extensive themed cruise bar, spread over 3 floors that welcomes locals and tourists. Facilities include a bar, dance floor, original art deco cinema, private cabins, dark room, lockers, steam room, showers. Located within an impressive Niçois building in the city centre. Closed on Tuesdays. 7 rue Foncet.

Les Bains-Douches – Wander through the labyrinth of hallways and playrooms spread out over three floors  it is one of the most popular gay saunas on the French Riviera. Facilities include a sauna, steam room, big whirlpool, video room, bar, private cabins. This place is noted for being extremely hygienic and friendly. Regular naked parties and themed nights. 7 rue Gubernatis.

Beach

Castel Plage – Very chic private beach, bar & restaurant, located at the eastern end of Promenade des Anglais, near the Chateau on the hill. with  a relatively sheltered beach, with private decking down to the waters edge. Always popular with the gay crowd. Expect to pay for sun beds, shades and everything to want to eat and drink, but the service is fast and prices are reasonable.
